Leading worm gear screw jack manufacturer relies on abas

Karlsruhe, Germany, September 27, 2013 — After implementing the total ERP solution from abas, Maschinenfabrik ALBERT GmbH from Austria, a worm gear screw jack manufacturer, was able to increase the efficiency and transparency of their processes and overcome inter-organizational boundaries.

High lifting capacity and variable speeds coupled with excellent reliability, low maintenance, and energy efficiency: these properties have made worm gear screw jacks commonplace in manufacturing plants, from the paper industry to the steel industry, as well as in mechanical engineering, medical engineering and the packaging industry for some time now.

Maschinenfabrik ALBERT, with their headquarters in Gampern, Austria, is one of the leading manufacturers of worm gear screw jacks, which they offer in standard and custom designs. The company is growing, thanks in part to the support provided by the abas total ERP solution, which went live at ALBERT in May 2009.

An adaptable and upgrade compatible ERP system

The abas system replaced an ERP application that was implemented a short time previously. "We started an intensive search for a suitable solution that offered performance and adaptability, yet could remain upgrade compatible and be implemented as a group solution," remembers Anton Gassner, Head of IT and ERP. The system also had to provide data integration with the parent company, Inkoma. Three providers made it to the final selection round. "Key users from the various departments tested the systems, and then a consensus was reached," explains the ERP expert. Upgrade compatibility was also tested, and abas once again proved their claim that updates can be performed over a single weekend and without any problems. Because the parent company, Inkoma, already uses the ERP solution from abas, it was already established that the system could be implemented as a group solution.

Effective production management

ALBERT has a real net output ratio of 90%. "We are proud of that figure. It sets us apart from the competition," declares Martin Kirchmaier, Managing Director of Maschinenfabrik ALBERT GmbH. Typical production is in small to medium series with batches of 1 to 100 pieces. Taking stock of the year, he continues, "We are satisfied with the workload we have had this year. Despite heavy competition, we were able to win almost every project, but especially the larger ones. I would put that down to our great products and high quality, but also to excellent teamwork." At ALBERT, the focus for the ERP solution was clearly in production and associated areas. Anton Gassner: "Efficient, transparent processes are the be-all and end-all in production. These include BOM management, work orders, and scheduling, from initial planning to delivery and installation."

Reliable financial statements

Martin Kirchmaier: "With our ERP system we can now create a financial statement based on dependable figures, at basically any time. We currently generate financial statements quarterly, which provides us a reliable overview of our business status. This is, of course, very important to me as the Managing Director. I always know where we stand and where we are heading. ALBERT is a project company and orders worth millions are not a rarity."

Manageable sales order tracking

The total ERP solution has become indispensable for ALBERT's day-to-day business processes. With their previous solution, ALBERT had difficulty reliably knowing their production status. Anton Gassner: "We had to invest in a detailed planning tool. With abas we don't need it. Now we have an excellent overview of machine scheduling, production control, and deadlines. We know whether materials and external procurement parts are on hand. Sales order tracking is easy to follow." Accordingly, better key figures from production was a critical requirement for the ERP solution, as Martin Kirchmaier clarifies: "The key figures form the basis for all of our business processes: from purchasing, sales order quotations, and production to price determination, scheduling, delivery deadlines, and preliminary and final costing, today we achieve all of this on the basis of the abas system."

Efficiency through cooperation

The ERP solution from abas helps employees at ALBERT coordinate efforts across the entire company, as the Managing Director states: "Work at ALBERT used to be highly compartmented. The ERP solution opened the doors for us in this regard, so that today we are able to work much more interdepartmental. abas almost forces us to do this — and I mean that in a positive way."

Improved warehouse management saves time

The improvements in warehouse management can be measured in real numbers. Because of their high real net output ration, ALBERT uses C-Part management. "This means that even the smallest screw is processed in abas," explains Gassner. Beyond sheer warehouse administration, the total ERP solution offers additional, optional tools for optimizing warehouse management. "These were really worthwhile," states Gassner, "these tools helped us improve evaluations in the warehouse, but specifically we can now retrieve and deposit materials in the warehouse 40 percent faster. Naturally, this has an enormous effect on our total process times."

The Managing Director of ALBERT is very pleased with the results achieved with the ERP solution: "abas was a tremendous help in optimizing our processes."
